Asking Questions
Let's stop here and ask some questions. Grandfather has just told John he has an "unbreakable code." He says the code is the Navajo language and that it saved his life in World War II. This seems confusing.
How did a language save Grandfather's life?
How will it improve John's situation?
And why is it "unbreakable"?
Do you have any questions?
Let's read on and try to find the answer to these questions.
8
Making Connections
Have you ever moved or started a new school?
Have you ever been afraid you were not like the other people around you?
What was it like to be new or different?
How did you adjust?
Do you think John is feeling the same way?
9
10
Making Connections
Can you make a connection to Grandfather's story?
Have you ever wanted to do something that had special requirements?
Did you meet those requirements?
What did you do if you did not meet them?

Answering Questions
Some of our questions have been answered.
The Navajo language is being turned into a special code that can be used by the US Marines.
The Grandfather and other Navajo were recruited, trained and given a specific mission.
This gave Grandfather a purpose and a way to show how important his heritage is to America.
The code was unbreakable because few people knew it and it had never been written down.

Summarizing
How would you sum up the main points of page 230 in your own words?
15
16
Summarizing
How would you summarize Grandfather's experiences during the war?
17
18
Making Connections
Can you make a connection to what Grandfather is saying here?
Have you ever done something to help someone or to stand up for a cause you believed in?
Did you receive recognition or praise for it? If not, was simply knowing you had helped enough of a reward?

Answering Questions
We found out that the code is part of John's Navajo heritage that helped the US win a war. It should be a source of pride for him. The story of the code has made him feel better about moving. No matter where he goes, he will know how brave and selfless his grandfather was and show these qualities himself.
