What is the direct object?
A direct object is a noun, pronoun, or word group that tells who or what receives the action of the verb or that shows the result of the action.

Let's break that down a little.
Direct objects are always a noun or pronoun.
Direct objects receive the action of a sentence.
-Direct objects can only be in a sentence if there is an action verb.

So how do they work?
A direct object answers the question Whom? or What? after a verb.
Example: Liana has already read that book.
-Liana has read what? book.

There are steps to find the direct object.
Step One: Find the verb of the sentence.
Step Two: Find the subject of the sentence.
Step Three: Ask yourself [subject] [verb] what?
Step Four: The answer to your question will be your Direct Object.
