Earthquakes

2004 Indian Ocean earthquake

Indian Ocean tsunami(undersea
earthquake) of 2004, tsunami that
hit the coasts of several countries
of South and Southeast Asia in
December 2004.

It was caused by the convergent
plate boundaries.

The tsunami killed at least 225,000
people.

Earthquakes

2010 Haiti earthquake

2010 Haiti earthquake, large-scale
earthquake that occurred January 12,
2010, on the West Indian island of
Hispaniola, comprising the countries of
Haiti and the Dominican Republic

It was caused by the convergent plate
boundary

The initial shock registered a
magnitude of 7.0 and was soon followed
by two aftershocks of magnitudes 5.9
and 5.5.

Volcanic Eruptions

1815 Mt. tambora eruption

Mount Tambora, Indonesian Gunung
Tambora, volcanic mountain on the
northern coast of Sumbawa island,
Indonesia, that in April 1815 exploded in the
largest volcanic eruption in recorded
history.

It was caused by the convergent plate
boundary

Before its eruption Mount Tambora was
about 4,300 metres (14,000 feet) high. After
the eruption ended, a caldera spanning
some 6 km (3.7 miles) across remained.

Volcanic Eruptions

1883 eruption of Krakatoa

Krakatoa, Indonesian Krakatau, volcano
on Rakata Island in the Sunda Strait
between Java and Sumatra, Indonesia.
Its explosive eruption in 1883 was one of
the most catastrophic in history.

It was caused by the convergent plate
boundary

From its base, 1,000 feet (300 metres)
below sea level, the cone projected
about 6,000 feet (1,800 metres) above
the sea.

Island Formation

The Formation of kauai

Kauai, Hawaiian Kaua‘i, volcanic
island, Kauai county, Hawaii, U.S.
It lies 72 miles (116 km) northwest
of Oahu island across the Kauai
Channel.

It was caused by the
convergent plate boundary

Kauai has Hawaii’s only
consistently navigable rivers.

Mountain Range

Andes

Andes Mountains, also called the Andes,
Spanish Cordillera de los Andes or Los
Andes, mountain system of South America
and one of the great natural features on
Earth.

It was caused by the subduction plate
boundary

The Andes consist of a vast series of
extremely high plateaus surmounted by
even higher peaks that form an unbroken
rampart over a distance of some 5,500 miles
(8,900 kilometres)

Fault Line

San Andreas

San Andreas Fault, major fracture of the
Earth’s crust in extreme western North
America

It was caused by the transform plate
boundary

According to the theory of plate tectonics,
the San Andreas Fault represents the
transform (strike-slip) boundary between
two major plates of the Earth’s crust: the
Northern Pacific to the south and west and
the North American to the north and east.

Mid Atlantic Ridge

IceLand

Mid-Atlantic Ridge, submarine ridge lying
along the north-south axis of the Atlantic
Ocean; it occupies the central part of the
basin between a series of flat abyssal
plains that continue to the margins of the
continental coasts

It was caused by the divergent plate
boundary

Iceland was founded more than 1,000 years
ago during the Viking age of exploration
and settled by a mixed Norse and Celtic
population.
