Ways to use the -ing form

We can use the -ing form of a verb as a noun or an adjective.

1. As a noun

   I love swimming.
   Swimming is very good for your health.
   You can get fit by swimming regularly.

2. As an adjective

   The main problem today is rising prices.
   That program was really boring.
   He saw a woman lying on the floor.

When to use -ing form or Gerund ?

• Nearly uncountable nouns, they can be used as the subject or object of a verb :

  Ex : Learning English is easy.

  We enjoy learning English.

• ​After the following commons verbs :

  admit, like, dislike, hate, start, avoid, suggest, enjoy, begin, finish, don't mind, look forward to ...

• After prepositions :

  before, after, in, at, about, without, by, et cetera.

• After verbs of movement, action, or position, to indicate parallel activity:

  Ex : She sat looking at the sea.

  He walks reading his newspaper.

  I cook listening to the radio.

• Present participles as adjective :

  Ex : Did you read that amazing book ?

  This movie is so exciting !

• -Ing form as part of the continuous form of a verb (the classic way to use it) :

  Ex : He is painting.

  She was waiting.

  They will be coming.
