NFL Beginnings

The NFL began as the APFA, The American Professional Football Association. It first start with 40 teams, some still existing in the NFL today. It was a 100$ membership fee to join the NFL.

First NFL Game

Dayton vs. Columbus

The first match-up in NFL history begins with the Dayton flyers and the Columbus Panhandles.

The Akron Pros are the first ever NFL Champions. At the end of the season only 14 teams remained, but many more will come.

• The NFL holds its first draft and first televised game

• Cleveland Rams move to LA, bringing football to the west coast

• The Los Angeles Rams sign former UCLA stars Kenny Washington and Woody Strode, who will become the first African Americans to play in the NFL

​In 1960, Lamar Hunt and Bud Adams create a new football league called the American Football League (AFL)

Beginning of the Super Bowl

• Joe Namath causes drafting problems in AFL and NFL

• AFL becomes televised more than NFL

• In 1966, both leagues make a championship game that determines the true football champion

• NFL team Green Bay Packers beat AFL Team Chiefs in Super Bowl I

• Green Bay Packers win Super Bowl II against AFL Team Oakland Raiders

• NFL is considered superior

• Joe Namath of the AFL team New York Jets play against NFL team Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III

• Jets win and proves AFL is also superior

• NFL and AFL merge to make one big NFL with all teams included

• More teams join in while some move out of cities, as the Rams leave LA to St Louis

• Within time, the NFL becomes more popular than the MLB which makes more cities wanting to join in

• Miami, Tampa, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Baltimore, Cleveland and Indianapolis all become new cities in the NFL

• With Houston Oilers moving to Tennessee to make the Tennessee Titans, NFL fans were enrage causing Houston to have a team again in 2002 called the Houston Texans, they are the latest team in the NFL

2016 through 2021

• St louis Rams and San Diego Chargers move to LA in 2016

• Oakland Raiders leave to move to Las Vegas, the are the latest team to relocate

• In Super Bowl LV, NFL quarterback Tom Brady becomes the first and only player to receive 7 super bowl wins in his 20+ seasons

  (6 super bowls in New England Patriots, 1 super bowl in Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

The NFL has become the most viewed american sport and the 2nd most famous championship game behind the Olyimpics. Super Bowl LVII will become the most paid to watch event in the world in February 12 2023
