Figurative language is used to:

Tone is all about how the AUTHOR feels about the subject.

Mood is all about the READER.

The AUTHOR uses DICTION, or word choice, specifically for the subject and audience.

An author's purpose is the reason for or intent in writing. Author's purpose may be to amuse, persuade, inform, or decribe something to the readers.

Point of View is the perspective from which the story is told.
