Density

2

I can Construct an explanation for how an object’s mass and volume determine if it sinks or floats in water

Learning Target

3

Essential Question

What makes an object more or less dense?

4

Why?

Density is very important for the following:

Gold mining

Blood seperation (tests)

DNA extraction

Designing things from jewelry to sky scrapers

5

Density is a property of matter.

  • A physical property of matter is simply something that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of a substance.

  • Density is the amount of matter in a certain volume of substance.

  • Density is how close particles are in an object (the density does not change no matter how much of the substance there is)

6

Multiple Choice

What is a physical property of matter?

1

The amount of density an organism has

2

Somethings that an object owns

3

Something that can be observed or measured

4

Something that can be inferred or not directly states

7

Multiple Select

What is density?

1

The amount of matter within a certain volume

2

How close together particles are in an object

3

The amount of volume inside of water

4

How close together protons are in an object

8

Multiple Choice

Density

Physical property

atom

proton

Solid

The amount of mass in a certain volume

An observable or measurable characteristic

The smallest particle that something can be divided into

A positive particle

The most dense state of matter

15

1

sink

2

float

3

neither

16

3

neither

17

Water's density is 1000kg/cm3

More dense than water:

Glycerin- 1260kg/cm3

Clay-2650kg/cm3

Marble- 2750kg/cm3

18
