The Journey

– Lewis and Clark, with a group of 40 others met at St. Louis

where the Mississippi River flows.

– They left St. Louis on May 14, 1804.
– The group followed the river up to present-day North Dakota.

After this, the group traveled by foot, horse, canoe, and keelboat.

– The group spent their first winter at Fort Mandan.

Here they hired a French Canadian trader Toussaint Charbonneau, and

his wife a Shoshone Native American, Sacagawea.

– They went through the Rocky Mountains and followed the

Columbia River to present-day Washington and Oregon.

– On November 7, 1805 they reached the Pacific Ocean.
