Multiple Choice

Jenny bakes a LARGE pizza and a SMALL pizza. She cuts each pizza into eighths and gives Mark 3 eighths of each pizza to take home. Mark writes the equation 38\frac{3}{8} ++ 38\frac{3}{8} == 68\frac{6}{8} to show the amount of pizza he takes home.

Explain Mark's mistake?

1

There is no mistake. He is correct.

2

He should have added the denominators to get 616\frac{6}{16}

3

He added correctly, but one pizza was a large size and one was a small size so we can't add the two fractions together because the pieces will not be the same size. The large pizza will have bigger slices than the small pizza. In order to add fractions, the pizza's would have to be the same size.
