Section 3.2

You will need:

  • Notebook

  • Calculator

  • Pencil

  • Worksheet from Sub

media

2

Recall the parts of an equation !!

media

3

What is an inequality?

Inequality means "not equal"

**Note** Inequalities does not contain the equal sign.

media

4

Process Steps

  • Step 1: Add or subtract like terms

  • Step 2: Multiply or divide both sides by the coefficient (the # with the variable).

  • **If the coefficient is negative, flip the inequality sign**

  • Remember we want the variable on one side by itself!

  • Step 3: Set the variable to the solution using the inequality symbol.

5

Multiple Choice

What is the coefficient?

1

Numbers that stand alone.

2

A letter (a-z) that represents an unknown number.

3

The number in front of the variable.

6

Multiple Choice

A variable is represented as a....

1

Number

2

Letter

7

Multiple Choice

What does inequality mean?

1

equal

2

not equal

8

Reminders:

  • Goal: Get the variable by itself

  • Start on the side with the variable

  • What you do to one side, do to the other!

9

Tips for Solving!

  • Add or subtract before multiply or divide

  • Don't forget to flip your signs when you multiply or divide by a NEGATIVE on BOTH SIDES!

  • Graph your answer when finished

10

You do!

Try it out on your own!

Do I need to flip my sign?
-3x  ≥ 12
1

Yes, because I'll be dividing by a negative number

2

No, because you never flip the sign.
