Metamorphosis Part 2 Review

Summary

Gregor wakes to find someone has left food for him – milk and bread. Milk used to be his favorite drink, but his tastes have changed and he now finds it repulsive. He worries about what his family will do, now that he is no longer able to take care of them. Someone cracks the door but immediately closes it. Gregor goes under the couch and falls asleep – thinking he will do everything within his power to reduce his burden on his family. In the morning, Grete opens the door but again shuts it when she sees Gregor under the couch. She then re-enters the room, finds that Gregor did not eat the food, and brings him a variety of food to try. Gregor finds the most rotten food the tastiest and shows no interest in vegetables. Grete returns to clean up the remains while Gregor hides, and Grete reports back to the family. Gregor often listens to his family through his door and learns that the family did not spend all the money he gave them. In fact, they put some aside. However, the family will need to find jobs now. Gregor is saddened by this, knowing his parents have been out of work (his father due to his being out of shapea nd lacking confidence and his mother due to her asthma). Gregor also reflects on the fact that his biggest goal was to send Grete to music school to play the violin. Gregor is especially fond of Grete. Gregor begins to adapt to his new body and tastes. He begins to develop a liking for running around his walls and ceiling. Grete continues to care for him but is obviously repulsed by him. His parents avoid him altogether and never come into the bedroom. The mother exhibits some curiosity about visiting Gregor, but Grete discourages this due to the way he looks. Grete observes that Gregor’s enjoying running around the walls of the room and decides to remove his furniture to give him more space to do so. The mother worries that this will be dehumanizing for Gregor, but Grete insists it is best for him. Gregor is initially worried about losing all of the items he loved in his human state. In particular, he climbs onto the wall to cover his beloved photo of the woman in furs – refusing to allow them to remove it. The mother sees Gregor on the wall and passes out at the sight of him. When Gregor’s father returns home, he mistakenly believes that Gregor attacked the mother, so he chases Gregor angrily around the living space. Gregor’s father looks very different now – he is I better shape and is dressed in a work uniform. The father throws apples at Gregor,, one of which becomes lodged in his back and causes him a great deal of pain. Finally, the mother begs the father to stop
