Alfred Wegner first got the idea for continental drift when he noticed that a lot of the large land masses looked like they fit together like a puzzle piece!

Number 1: 1912

Scientists didn't believed Wegner, however, and it would be more than 38 years before people tried to chart the ocean floor and noticed ridges that said otherwise.

Number 2: 1850s

Now, we know that both continental drift and plate tectonics theory are correct, proving that the continents are constantly moving, and large tectonic plates cause this.

Number 3: Today

A Short Summary of the History:

7

What was Pangea?

Pangea is the word used for the super-continent that was a land mass millions of years ago. Because of tectonic plates, or chuncks of lithosphere in the earth, always shifting and moving, pangea was eventually seperated into smaller continents, and overtime, they moved away so drastically that you see the land-masses we know today. However, looking close enough like Wegner did, you can still make out the "puzzle piece" type mirroring, most commonly between Africa and South America.

8

Draw

Look at the map and draw arrows where you think the continents would fit together. Pay attention to the key at the bottom of the photo.
