However, a blacksmith, Amakuni realised the Tachi's disadvantage. So, he & his assisstant prayed for 7 days & 7 nights until they found enlightenment.

NAGINATA

media

8

The NAGINATA

The Naginata was simply invented to keep distance on the battlefield.

If you studied the painting, you may have noticed the blade was curved, not very common for a polearm. The reason for that is so soldiers weren't limited to only thrusts, they could slice with a Naginata. This allowed for deadly, thrust-slicing combos that were difficult to evade.

The Naginata, continued

HOWEVER, there were a few disadvantages to the Naginata: Firstly, the user had to be a certain build to wield it; typically athletic build were exclusive to wield the Naginata. An "athletic" build is a lean muscle, short build which wasn't necessarily rare, nor common. It was an every-now-&-then apperance.

A "tactical" Disadvantage

Furthermore, an athletic build was very common in Japanese women, so two Naginata variants came in: ō-naginata were used by men, & ko-naginata were used by women. Later, the Naginata began to be used as a self-defense weapon by the wives of samurai.
