I can identify how the various social and labor reforms tried to bring about change in the United States by analyzing specific examples.

The Granger Movement
-Many Farmers facing hardships and isolation of rural
life would join the Grange
-Originally met to develop social ties, or form a sense of
community
-Farmers realized that the railroad companies had a
great control over their livelihoods
-Railroads were the main way in which goods were delivered.
Railroads could charge large amounts of money for shipping
-Granger movement pressed for limits to the power of
railroads
-Regulation would be implemented after Munn v. Illinois

Populist Movement:
-Was made up of many factory workers
and farmers
-They formed a political party known as
the Populist Party
-Goals: graduated income tax, direct election of
United States Senators, eight-hour workday,
and government ownership of railroads,
telegraphs, and telephones
-WilliamJennings Bryan(Populist) vs. William
Mckinley(Republican)

-Muckrakers: investigated and exposed corruption and injustice through articles
in mass-circulation magazines. Also wrote novels dramatizing situations that
demanded reform
