9
Reflection
When an object or wave hits a surface
through which it cannot pass, it bounces
back.
This bouncing back of a wave when it meets
a surface or boundary is called reflection.
10
Reflection
11
Refraction
When a wave moves from one medium into
another medium at an angle, it changes speed
as it enters the second medium. This causes
the wave to bend.
The bending of waves as they pass from one
medium to another is called refraction.
“Broken pencil” trick
12
Refraction
13
Multiple Choice
when a wave is bent by traveling from one medium to another
reflection
refraction

14
Multiple Choice
When a wave bounces off of something and moves in a different direction
reflection

Refraction
Frequency
17
Diffraction
The bending of a wave as it passes an
edge or an opening (a barrier).
This is why you can hear sound
around a corner.
18
Diffraction
19
Interference
Waves that exist in the same place at
the same time experience interference.
20
2 types of Interference
Constructive: Two crests or two troughs will
add together to make a larger crest or
trough. They do not average out.
It occurs whenever two waves combine to
make a wave with a larger amplitude.
21
2 types of Interference
Destructive: Crest meets trough;
amplitude is smaller or completely
cancels out.
22
Constructive vs. Destructive
23
Interference
Of light: creates rainbows in oil or soap
bubbles.
Of sound: creates beats in music.
24
The Doppler Effect
The apparent change in frequency of a
moving object to the observer.
Ex: NASCAR, ambulance
25
Resonance
Resonance is a wave's ability to match
the natural frequency of an object
Examples of things that use resonance:
Instruments
Bridges
26
Resonance: How instruments work
Musical instruments are set into
vibrational motion at their natural
frequency when a person hits, strikes,
strums, plucks or somehow disturbs the
object.
This creates resonance and causes
sound, as well as the disruption of other
objects around the instrument.
