Simple Past

There are no rules. You have to remember them. Here are some common irregular verbs:
take -> took / go -> went / build -> built / fly -> flew / drink -> drank / eat -> ate / sleep -> slept / leave -> left / speak -> spoke

Irregular Verbs

Most verbs are regular. Make the simple past with these verbs by adding ~ed. If the verb ends in ~y change it to 'i' and add ~ed. If the verb ends in ~e just add ~d.

visit -> visited

carry -> carried

love -> loved
