• General Dwight D. Eisenhower leads

invasion into Africa to fight German troops

• Chased the German General Rommel and

his Afrika Corps and defeated them by
May 1943

Italian Campaign
• US captures Sicily in 1943. Stunned by

defeat Mussolini is forced to resign.

• “Bloody Anzio” battle lasted 4 months with

25,000 Allies and 30,000 Axis dead. Allies
eventually captured Italy in 1945.

• After initial success US troops drove them

back and destroyed 600 tanks and 1,600
planes with 120,000 German troops dead

• SS troops try to burn evidence as Soviet and

American troops advance but there is no time
and the camps become abandoned

• Prisoners left alive are starving and emaciated

and the smell of burnt flesh is everywhere

Unconditional surrender
• April 1945 Soviet troops are at Berlin and

American troops are close to the west

• Hitler commits suicide in his underground bunker

on April 29

• May 8, 1945 V-E Day (Victory in Europe Day)
FDR dies
• April 12, 1945 FDR has a stroke and dies. Vice

President Harry Truman is sworn in as President
