Solving Rational Equations

2

Rational Equations with more than 2 terms
  • The LCD (lowest common denominator) is the combination of all the denominators of the equations. Reduce this if possible.

  • Multiply each term/fraction by the LCD

  • Cancel any common factors or terms

  • Simplify and solve for x.

When we can't cross multiply, use LCD

4

Solving rational equations
  • 1. Factor the DENOMINATORS only

  • 2. Multiply each side of the equation by the least common multiple (LCM) this should get rid of the fraction

  • 3. Solve

  • 4. Check to make sure your answers work (you don't divide by zero)

Which of the following examples of Rational Equations can be solved by cross multiplication?

1

xx−2=35\frac{x}{x-2}=\frac{3}{5}

2

xx+1 −3x = 2x−1\frac{x}{x+1}\ -3x\ =\ \frac{2}{x-1}
