Greatest Challenge

​As a young man, he was fit and healthy. But by the time of his death, the King weighed close to 400 pounds. He had leg ulcers, muscle weakness, and, according to some accounts, a significant personality shift in middle age towards more paranoia, anxiety, depression and mental deterioration.

He was a powerful man and charismatic figure; perhaps best known for his tumultuous love life and the establishment of the Church of England. He is also credited with establishing the Royal Navy, encouraging shipbuilding and the creation of anchorages and dockyards.

28th June 1491 - Henry was born at Greenwich Palace to King Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. He was their second son.

  • 2nd April 1502 - Henry's older brother Arthur dies aged just 15. Henry becomes the new heir to the throne aged just 10.

  • 21st April 1509 - Henry's father, King Henry VII, dies, and Henry becomes King Henry VIII.

  • 11th June 1509 - Henry marries Catherine of Aragon - his brother's widow and daughter of Spanish rulers.

  • 24th June 1509 - Henry and Catherine are formally crowned King and Queen of England.

  • 18th February 1516 - After many miscarriages and stillbirths, Catherine of Aragon gave birth to a baby girl: Princess Mary.

31st October 1517 - Over in what is now Germany, Martin Luther sends a letter containing his '95 Theses' (a list of 95 complaints about Catholic church doctrine and practices) to the Archbishop of Mainz. Allegedly, Luther also nailed a paper copy of the 95 Theses to the door of the cathedral in Worms, the city where he lived. This is when the Protestant Reformation officially began.

  • November 1518 - Henry began to have doubts about his marriage to Catherine. Catherine had been pregnant 6 times, but only one of her children had survived infancy - and it was a girl. Catherine was older than Henry, and he was beginning to think that she would never be able to give him a son.

  • 11th-22nd June 1520 - A great summit took place to strengthen the new peace and alliance between King Henry VIII of England and King Francis I of France after years of warfare. This summit was a truly momentous occasion, known as the Field of the Cloth of Gold because it took place on a great field covered in tents made from golden fabric.

  • February 1522 - Anne Boleyn, recently returned from the French court, is given a position in the English court, as part of the Queen's household.

  • June 1527 - Henry sends a formal request to the Pope asking for permission to marry again for the sakes of having a male heir and send Catherine away to a convent. Unfortunately for Henry, Catherine's nephew was the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, who had a lot of power over the Pope, so the chances of the Pope giving him what he wanted were extremely slim.
