Introduction

Music, dance and drama are very important to Asian people particularly in Indonesia, Japan and China. The collaboration between the uses of these three shows the cultural artistry of the performers in their own theatrical presentations.


Music serves as a major element in each play presentation that enhances its cultural identity.

Wayang Kulit

Wayang kulit is a traditional form of puppet-shadow play originally found in the cultures
of Java, Bali, and Lombok in Indonesia.

In a wayang kulit performance, the puppet figures
are rear-projected on a linen screen with
a coconut-oil lamp or electric light.

Wayang kulit is one of the many different
forms of wayang theatre found in Indonesia;
the others include wayang beber, wayang
klitik, wayang golek, wayang topeng, and
wayang wong. Wayang kulit is among the
best known, offering a unique combination of
ritual, lesson and entertainment.

Dalang

The manipulator-narrator sits at the back of a screen or cloth(kelir). Behind him are the gamelan who accompany the performance throughout. The dalang also gives the movement and voice to puppets.

Musicians

They accompany the dalang during the play. They are seated at the back of the dalang. The dalang also gives the signal to the musicians if music is needed in a scene.

Lights

Lights may be in form of using a traditional open coconut oil lamp (damar) or electric bulb that serves as light behind the white screen to give shadow to the puppet.

Other Wayang Plays

There are four other types of Indonesian Wayang aside from the Wayang Kulit. These are the following

Wayang Wong/ Wayang Orang

The performers act the roles of the puppets on a stage. Considered as one of the major Asian classical dance-drama form of theatre.

Wayang Golek

The puppets are shaped like wooden dolls with rounded head and arms. These are dressed with traditional costume. This play is famous in the area of West Java.

Wayang Topeng

Different from the other plays because of its focus on the story which narrates the activity of a noble men who lived in East Java. This is performed by men who wears masks which referred as topeng
