We know regular verbs, now let's step it up!

This is not all stem-changing verbs

Regular verb conjugations

Three steps:

1. Take of the ar/er/ir ending

2. Rewrite the stem (what's left after taking the ending off)

3. Add the new ending

Stem changing verb conjugations

Four steps:

1. Take of the ar/er/ir ending

2. Change the stem

3. Rewrite the stem (what's left after taking the ending off)

4. Add the new ending (endings are the same for all present tense (regular) verbs)

   1. So there are TWO changes now-the ending AND the stem

• almorzar-to (eat) lunch

• Endings are still:

  • o/as/a/amos/áis/an

• The o in the stem of almorzar (almorz) changes to ue in all forms but the nosotros and vosotros.

  • Yo almuerzo

  • *Nosotros almorzamos*

  • Ellos almuerzan

o-ue

• preferir:to prefer

• Endings are still:

  • o/as/a/amos/áis/an

• The e in the stem of preferir (prefer) changes to ie in all forms but the nosotros and vosotros.

  • Yo prefiero

  • *Nosotros preferimos*

  • Ellos prefieren

• *If there is more than 1 e, it's almost always the second e.

• volver (to return)

• encontrar (to find)

• dormir (to sleep)
