Salt Water

Clouds are made up of tiny droplets of liquid water. They form when the invisible water vapor in the air condenses into visible water droplets.

Artificial hole that is dug into the ground in order to reach water that is sitting in an aquifer.

Simpler version of something in the real world. This is used by scientists to help them better understand how something works.

Name given to the process in which water vapor gets cold and turns liquid.

• Examples: dew on the grass, foggy mirror after shower, water droplets on a cold drink bottle

• The type of water we need to survive. Sources include: rain, lakes, rivers, and aquifers.

• A person can only survive 3 days without fresh water.

• 1% of the earth's water is liquid freshwater

• An average American household uses over 60 gallons of water

A substance made by mixing two or more things together.

Mixture

Liquid mixture where something is evenly mixed into a liquid (dissolves).

Solution

When something breaks down to tiny pieces that you cannot see.

Dissolve

Characteristics that you can measure and observe.

Properties

The name given to the process in which water goes from being liquid to a gas.

• Examples: The sun heats a puddle and it looks like it disappears, boiling water

Evaporation

Large pieces of land that used to be salty bodies of water that have evaporated (or dried up) leaving the salt behind.

Salt Flat

Ground that can hold water.

Aquifer

Scientific name given for water in its gas phase.

• Example:

  boiling water --> steam

Water Vapor

A storm that is as big as a state. A hurricane starts in the ocean and develops super strong winds and swirling clouds.

Hurricane

• Flooding caused by waves that come up on the shore.

• Wind pushes on the surface of an ocean creating large waves.

Storm Surge

Land that is higher up from the ocean level.

Higher Elevation

Walls made of concrete and soil; keeps water out of the city.
