There are important differences between online and offline communication. Something shared online can be seen instantaneously, once it is online it is impossible to retract. People can comment and reply to information that is posted 24 hours a day every day. The Internet is always "on". When you are posting things online there is no way people can see body language or hear tone of voice to help decipher the meanings of messages. These are called paralinguistic cues.

Online & Offline Communication

2

Face-to-face is much easier to determine the true meaning of a message.

It is also obvious face-to-face who is saying something. Online people may use different names and even claim a different identity. Some people may do this for safety but most are hiding who they are so they can "misbehave" and not get caught. People may feel less inhibited online. They can more easily express themselves, sometimes appropriately and sometimes not. People should think very carefully of their online communication and how it affects themselves and others.
