LEON BATTISTA ALBERTI

(1404 - 1472) A Florentine mathematician, artist, and writer who emphasized
the study of nature and balance in art. He wrote several treatises on the arts,
one of which became the blueprint for mathematically based linear
perspective.

Alberti changed the philosophy behind art-making. His famous book on painting introduced the idea
that art should study and imitate nature, and that in order to be a truly beautiful work, it must be done in
perfect proportion and perspective.

Major works:
art-theory treatises: de pittura (on painting), 1436; de re aedificatoria (on architecture), ca. 1460.

Botticelli, The Birth of Venus, ca. 1486

A tempera painting by Sandro

Botticelli, circa 1486, that depicts
the goddess Venus after she has
emerged from the sea. It highlights

Botticelli's focus on the poetic

elements of the Classical world. It
does not use perspective and has
the S-shaped curves typical of the

International Gothic style.

The use of light creates believable forms without the use

of precise mathematical perspective.

Figures from Greek mythology are used to inspire faith in

the Christian God.

Symbolism is used to represent a contrast between

spiritual innocence and a soul awakening to reason.

15

Leonardo da Vinci

Most important contribution to Western art was the idea of scientific observation

connected art with science

His own scientific investigations led to his depictions of the human form.

Introduced and used sfumato – the technique of allowing tones and colors to shade gradually into one another, producing softened outlines or hazy forms

Influenced by Van der Weyden
