Objectives:

  • Recognize important events in Bach's life.

  • Describe musical examples, including the Brandenburg Concerto no. 2 and The Art of the Fugue.

  • Trace Mozart's musical development, from his start as a child prodigy to his maturity as an accomplished composer in Vienna.

  • Describe Symphony no. 40 using specific vocabulary.

  • Summarize the three periods in Beethoven's life.

  • Discover the workings of the Pathetique Sonata.

  • Explore the life of a composer of your choice. In your opinion, who could join Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart as a key composer?

5

Bach, Mozart, Beethoven

Musical titans all. But what made them so brilliant? Why has their music endured? Each man represents the musical life of an entire era. Bach dwarfed other composers in his mastery of the Baroque style. Mozart added depth to the Classical era, with symphonies and operas that were full of feeling and mature in structure. And, in Beethoven, the world saw the stirrings of the

romantic soul. His music builds a bridge from the refined tastes of Classical composers to the anguished humanity of the Romantics.

6

Terms:

The applause was deafening. Instantly, the audience rose to its feet, cheering the choir and soloists, the orchestra, and especially the maestro, Beethoven. Everyone agreed — the symphony premiere was a smash hit.

Suddenly, the solo soprano looked at the maestro and saw that he did not understand. Gently, she took his arm and turned him around so that he could see the adoring crowd. He smiled.

Poor Beethoven could not hear the performance of his most glorious work, Symphony No. 9. For many years, he'd been ashamed of his hearing loss, and tried to hide it as best he could.
