Slope From An Equation

  • If the equation is written in this form, you look for the number being multiplied by the variable x.

Slope From A Graph

  • To find the slope of a line, you would use what's called "rise over run."

  • Rise is looking at the vertical change which is the change (difference) in y-values

  • Run is looking at the horizontal change which is the change (difference) in x-values

  • Using this example, you would pick two definite points on the graph and determine the rise first, then the run.

  • This graph has already done most of the work. The rise is 4 and the run is 6.  To find the slope, you'll do 4 over 6 or 4/6 and REDUCE the fraction.

10

Slope From a Table

  • To find the slope from a table, you will find how the y-values change to the next and divide that by how the x-values change to the next.

  • Looking at the y-values -11 to -8, the number is getting closer to zero so you have to be adding.  You're adding 3.

  • Looking at the x-values -5 to -2, the number is getting closer to zero so you have to be adding.  You're adding 3.

  • To find the slope, you'll do 3 divide by 3 (3/3) and get 1
