What are some ways that someone's neighborhood might affect their health?

Housing Segregation and Redlining in America: A Short History

4

How living in a low-income minority neighborhood may affect health

(from Williams and Collins, 2001)

  • Determines access to grocery stores that are affordable and healthy

  • Tobacco & alcohol industries target low-income minority communities

  • Less time spent outside because of lack of recreational facilities, green space, and concerns about safety (elevated rates of crime)

  • Lack of police protection, municipal services, cleanliness, quietness, and access to good schools & community services

  • Proximity to doctors' offices & health clinics

5

media
  • A significantly larger proportion of the Black and African American and Hispanic populations are food insecure relative to the white population.

  • The proportion of Black or African American households that report very low food security is almost three times higher than the proportion of white households.

Education & Place

"Middle-class black and Hispanic children are also much more likely than poor white children to live in neighborhoods and attend schools with high concentrations of poor students.

These schools can face a myriad of challenges. They tend to have more difficulty recruiting and keeping the most skilled teachers, and classes are more likely to be disrupted by violent incidents or the emotional fallout from violence in the neighborhood. These schools often offer fewer high-level classes such as Advanced Placement courses, and the parents have fewer resources to raise extra money that can provide enhanced arts programs and facilities."

7

Consequences:

  • Runoff into water supply

  • Air pollution

  • Displacement of communities

Industry facilities, power plants, and the construction of highways are often in close proximity to low-income minority neighborhoods

8

COVID-19 and place

(Scott, 2020)

Key points:

  • Pharmacies in urban areas had fewer testing sites available compared to the suburbs

  • Black Americans are disproportionately infected by Covid-19, higher mortality rates.

  • “Concentration of poverty, poor-quality housing, and neighborhood environments leads to elevated exposure to chronic and acute psychosocial and environmental stressors”

    • Air pollution is linked to more severe cases & higher death rates from Covid-19

Discussion Questions

  • Have any of you noticed the effects of housing segregation? Can you think of any examples of racial segregation that you’ve seen in your hometown or other cities?

  • What have you noticed about the distribution of grocery stores or other businesses (fast food restaurants, liquor stores, vape stores, etc) in low-income minority neighborhoods vs affluent white neighborhoods?

  • Can you think of any examples of power plants or other facilities being built in low-income minority neighborhoods? Have you noticed any trends in where these infrastructures are built?

  • What have you noticed about race and education? Any examples from high school? Racial demographics of certain schools in a district or certain classes in a school?

  • Can you think of any current examples of covid and/or other disease disparities between races/neighborhoods?
