Let's look at some examples:
Although he was fast, he did not win the race.
While Ms. Owens was walking her dog, we planned the surprise party.
Until you are taller, you cannot ride the rollercoaster.

1. Use a comma and FANBOYS to join two independent clauses.
Let's practice the following for a GRADE.

Compound Sentences
Compound sentences have TWO independent clauses joined by a comma and FANBOYS (for and nor but or yet so).
You cannot just SLAP two sentences together. That is known as a run-on.
The independent clauses you connect must make sense when you put them together.

Complex Sentences
Complex sentences have a dependent clause and an independent clause
It uses SUBORDINATING conjunctions.
We call SUBORDINATING conjunctions AAAWWUBBIS
If the AAAWWUBBIS comes first, it needs a comma.

Simple Sentences
All sentences have a SUBJECT and a PREDICATE.
Simple sentences are also INDEPENDENT clauses.
They can stand on their own.
