Imagine the sign as an alligator. There are teeth on the open ended part of the symbol. The teeth are going to want the bigger number. Which means, the teeth are going to point the opposite way of the smaller number.
Less Than

Greater Than
Equal to basically means that both numbers are the same. There is not one that has more, or not one that has less.
