​Từ trái nghĩa là gì?

Antonym (từ trái nghĩa) - xuất phát từ tiếng Hy Lạp cổ với tiền tố “Anti” mang nghĩa “đối lập”, ghép cùng hậu tố “nym”  (name) là “tên”. Tức là, từ trái nghĩa là các từ dùng để định danh những điều đối lập.

Từ trái nghĩa có thể thuộc nhiều từ loại, như tính từ, trạng từ, danh từ, động từ.

Các loại từ trái nghĩa

Trong tiếng Anh, có 4 dạng từ trái nghĩa như sau: 

Loại 1: Graded antonyms (trái nghĩa theo cấp độ)

Đây là cặp từ mà nghĩa của chúng nằm trên phổ liên tục. Nói cách khác, chúng biểu thị 2 đầu của một thước đo giá trị. Chẳng hạn như nhiệt độ, chiều cao, tuổi tác, cân nặng, độ sáng…

Mặc dù có vẻ mang nghĩa trái ngược, quy chuẩn sẽ phụ thuộc vào quốc gia, vùng miền và văn hóa. Vậy nên Graded antonyms mang tính tương đối, không nhất quán. 

Thông thường Graded antonyms thường được dùng để so sánh.

​Loại 2: Relational antonyms (trái nghĩa theo mối quan hệ) Relational antonyms là cặp từ dựa trên mối quan hệ của chúng để chỉ ra sự khác biệt (về thế giới quan, vị trí, cấp bậc,...). Về cơ bản, không có sự đối lập mang tính từ vựng đối với từ teacher. Nhưng teacher và student đối lập trong bối cảnh mối quan hệ đôi bên (vai trò của cả khác nhau - teach và study). Điều này khiến cho chúng trở thành cặp từ trái nghĩa nếu cân nhắc đến mối quan hệ.

Một số cặp từ trái nghĩa trong tiếng Anh theo theo mối quan hệ: Queen- Princess (Nữ Hoàng - Công Chúa) Doctor - Patient (Bác sĩ - Bệnh Nhân) Servant - Master (Đầy tớ - Chủ nhân) Landlord - Tenant (Chủ nhà - Người thuê nhà) Seller - Buyer (Người bán - Người mua)

Loại 3: Binary antonyms (trái nghĩa nhị phân) Binary antonyms, hay còn gọi là complementary antonyms hoặc contradictory antonyms, là những cặp từ có nghĩa hoàn toàn trái ngược, trong đó, nghĩa của trong hai từ triệt tiêu, xóa bỏ nghĩa của từ còn lại. Nói cách khác, những cặp từ này là miêu tả hai trạng thái, cấu trúc, hành động… đối lập tuyệt đối. Một khi xuất hiện từ này, từ kia sẽ bị triệt tiêu.

Một số cặp từ trái nghĩa trong tiếng Anh nhị phân: Sleep - Awake (Ngủ - Thức) War - Peace (Chiến tranh - Hòa Bình) Sunrise - Sunset (Ngày - Đêm)

​Loại 4: Multiple Incompatibles - Taxonomics sisters (loạt từ không tương thích)

Đây là nhóm từ trái nghĩa mang tính tập thể, hệ thống các từ có cùng một đặc tính như màu sắc, gia vị, chất liệu,... đối lập với từ đã cho.

Các cặp từ trái nghĩa trong tiếng Anh không tương thích :

Đôi khi, nhiều người cho rằng một số từ trái nghĩa thuộc nhóm 4 này tạo cảm giác không thực sự trái nghĩa nhau.
