Vocabulary

Mitosis
A type of cell division used for
growth and repair. Cell divides
once into two identical cells.

Meiosis
A type of cell division used for
reproduction. The cell divides
twice to make four unique cells.

Crossing Over
The different chromosomes
combine together to form a
new combination of genetics.

Prophase
The chromosomes
condense in the center of
the nucleus.

Metaphase
The chromosomes line
up in the middle of the
cell.

Anaphase
The chromosomes split in
half and each half goes to
an opposite end of the cell.

Telophase
The cell now has 2
nuclei and is trying to
pull apart.

Cytokinesis
Cell division is over and
the cell is chopped into 2
new cells.

Interphase
The first and longest part of the
cell cycle. The cell grows (G1 and
G2) and makes a copy of its DNA
(S phase)

Haploid Cell
A cell with half the amount of
chromosomes (23 for
humans). Made in meiosis.

Diploid Cell
A cell with the full amount of
chromosomes (46 in
humans). Made during
mitosis.

Zygote
A fertilized egg (Sperm
cell + egg cell = Zygote)

Gamete (Germ Cell)
A reproductive cell
(sperm or egg cell). Used
in meiosis.

Somatic Cell
A body cell (any cell that
is not sperm or egg).
Used in mitosis.

Parent Cell
The original cell
before cell division
occurs.

Daughter Cells
The new cells made from
cell division. Parent cells
make daughter cells.
