SaaS
Software as a Service
Look up this concept and give some examples
3
Open Ended
What is SaaS and what is an example of SaaS?
4
SaaS Examples:
GMAIL: You can run a local email client, but gmail is hosted in the
cloud and provides this software experience via a web page.
Google Drive: Word/PowerPoint/Excel in the browser.
These are examples of Public SaaS.
5
IaaS
Infrastructure as a Service
Look up this concept and give some examples

What is IaaS and what is an example of IaaS?
7
IaaS Examples:
Amazon Web Services: You can choose to spin up a Linux machine much
like we do on vCenter/vSphere. You pay monthly based on how many CPU
cores and how much ram you use. You have complete control over how
you configure the operating system.
(Linux: you’ll always utilize putty/ssh to manage these.)
Note: iCSI students will get $100 in hosting credit this semester once we
start working with AWS.
Microsoft Azure: Same Thing
Google Cloud: Same thing
There are many providers out there that are awesome.
8
PaaS
Platform as a Service
Look up this concept and give some examples
(This one a bit tougher because we haven’t really worked with this
one.)
9
Open Ended
What is PaaS? What is an example?
10
PaaS
Google App Engine: This is a platform that will allow you to develop
applications and deploy them.
Think about developing a game for Android phones:
-You could set everything up on a server you own, program the game, and
deploy it yourself.
-You could use a PaaS so that all you have to do is start coding.
You don’t have control over the underlying infrastructure, but you do have
access to a higher level software stack that allows you to code, host, or
develop custom applications or software you create.

24
Digital Rights Management:
You can’t easily, for example, provide your

Which of these is NOT an example of security controls?
26
Multiple Choice
Which of these is NOT an example of security controls?
High availability
Access controls
Backups
Accounting and Logging
27
Backups are Security Controls that ensure business integrity and continuity in the event of data loss. Allows you to restore your data when needed.
High Availability security control that ensures users have
access to data. Having multiple servers available. If one
server fails or falls victim to a DOS or DDOS, other servers
will take over. (This counts as security)
Access Controls: Think Permissions, user accounts, and Firewall Rules.
Yes: Security for sure.
Accounting, Audits: You can look backwards using logs,
but you aren’t actively securing anything by logging.
28
You’ll see the acronym ROSI
This stands for Return on Security Investment.
In short: How much money are you saving by preventing a
security incident.
Example: Let’s say I could lose 10K in sales if my primary
customer facing web server fails for a day. It would make
sense to spend 5K on redundant web servers to create
high availability so this doesn’t happen.
29
Difference Between Data and Information
This is something they will definitely ask about on the
exam.
Data: Just that: Raw data or statistics
Information: If you take raw data and create meaningful
reports, this is what is considered information.
