-Gavrilo Princip, assassinated Ferdinand and wife

EFFECTS

Russia, France, and Great Britain).

THE U.S. JOINS IN 1917

U.S. was isolationist. Wanted to remain neutral (PRND).
But then…

Two reasons why:

1. Sinking of the Lusitania (by German U-Boats or
submarines)
Passenger ship that had Americans on board; not a

military boat

2. Zimmerman Telegram (by Germany to Mexico)
Coded letter/telegram sent to Mexico by Germany

to join an alliance and attack the U.S. if the U.S.
joined and if Germany won the war, it would give
Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico back.
