4/4 time signature

This looks like a common fraction but is a time signature. It tells you how many beats in a measure (top number) and the bottom number tells you what kind of note gets one count. For example:

4/4 - 4 beats to a measure, each quarter note gets one count

6/8 - 6 beats to a measure, each eighth note gets one count

3/4 - 3 beats to a measure, each quarter note gets one count.

Best Friends

When we play or sing more than one pitch at a time (more than one note at a time)

Harmony

Single notes that sound pleasing to our ears.

Sometimes called the "tune"

Usually hear this more than the harmony

What do you know about music notes already?

15

The piano

There is so much more we can learn from the piano. The quarter note was our “home base” for learning rhythm, and the piano will be the “home base” for our discussion of melody and harmony.

There are 88 black and white keys on the piano. As we go up or down the piano, the frequencies get higher or lower. But even though there are 88 keys on the piano, there are only 12 different notes! Sound confusing? Let’s clarify.

A note is a shorthand word musicians use to refer to a specific written duration (like quarter notes or half notes), or a specific pitch (in this case, a specific pitch on the piano) that lasts a certain amount of time. We already talked about notes in terms of duration, so now we will talk about notes in terms of a specific pitch on the piano.

Musicians don't always need to memorize their music before playing, they can also read it. Kind of like when you read instructions before following them, musicians will read the notes before playing them.

What are Music Notes?

26

Different notes are different sounds, higher notes will seem high-pitched, and lower notes will seem deeper.

What do different notes mean?
