1) Why do you think Danny and Danny’s classmates carried out those actions?

2) Piracy is the unauthorised use, copying or distribution of copyrighted material (including movies, TV shows and music). Why do we have laws against piracy?

Scenario 3: While doing a research project, Judy came across a very similar project done by someone called Madeline on the Internet. Judy then copied a large part of the report she found and submitted it as her own work to her teacher.

1) Why do you think Judy would do that?

2) You violate copyright laws when you use any original work like images, videos and/or presentations without permission. Why do we have copyright laws?

3) How would you feel if you were the creator of an original piece of work and you found out that someone had made use of your work without permission?

4) What happens if there is widespread violation of copyright laws? How could it affect society?

Scenario 5: Glenn invented a smart chip that boosted data efficiency, DATAsmarty, and shared about the technology with others before his patent application was approved. A few big companies dropped by and claimed that they would like to collaborate. However, little did Glenn realise that they wanted to take advantage of him. They used what they learnt from Glenn and made their own DATAsmarty devices without acknowledging him.

1) Why would those big companies do that?

2) A patent is a right that is granted for an invention. When someone registers a patent for his / her invention, the person would hold the exclusive right to use the patent. Why do we have patent laws?

3) How would you feel if you were Glenn and you realised what those big companies did?

5) Should society encourage such behaviour from those big companies? Why or why not?
