We will describe how landforms

change.

I will be able to differentiate
between weathering , erosion,

and deposition

Let’s get Nerdy

1. Put a couple of nerds in your mouth, but DO

NOT CHEW them. Observe and note what
happens to the nerds in your notebook.

2. Turn and tell your partner what happened

when I say GREENLIGHT

5

Questions

1. What happened when you just put

the nerd in your mouth but did not
chew?

What do you think the nerds represents?

Water in the ecosystem

Rocks getting broken down over time

Two types of Weathering:
Mechanical Weathering and Chemical Weathering

14

media

Two Types of Weathering

1. MECHANICAL WEATHERING
Physical processes that break rock into

fragments or smaller pieces

Examples:
1. Plant Roots
2. Burrowing Animals

3. Ice Wedging - occurs when water enters

cracks of rocks, freezes and expands, and
breaks rock apart.

Two Types of Weathering

2. CHEMICAL WEATHERING
Chemical reactions dissolve minerals in

rocks or change them into different
minerals.

Example: Dissolving - chemical process that

occurs when chemicals break down roock

Chemical – Dissolving

20

media

Dissolved carbon dioxide in rainwater or in moist air forms carbonic acid, and this acid reacts with minerals in rocks.

Caves are formed by Chemical Weathering!

Question 1

What is the

difference between

mechanical and

chemical

weathering?

22

Multiple Choice

What is Mechanical Weathering?

1

Chemical process that breaks down rocks into smaller pieces

2

Physical Process that breaks rocks into fragments

23

Multiple Choice

What is chemical Weathering?

1

Chemical  reactions dissolve minerals in rocks or change them into different minerals.

2

Physical processes that break rock into fragments or smaller pieces

24

Multiple Select

What are some examples of Mechanical Weathering?

1

Plant roots

2

dissolving

3

Burrowing animals

4

Ice wedging

25

4 Agents of Erosion:
1. Wind
2. Water
3. Gravity
4. Glaciers

What are the 4 agents of erosion? Please list then submit.

33

media

Note: Weathering has to happen before
erosion. The rocks have to be broken
into smaller sediments before they can
be eroded away.

34

media

Where did the sand end up? Did it change
location or positions?
