2
We will describe how landforms
change.
I will be able to differentiate
between weathering , erosion,
and deposition

Let’s get Nerdy
1. Put a couple of nerds in your mouth, but DO
NOT CHEW them. Observe and note what
happens to the nerds in your notebook.
2. Turn and tell your partner what happened
when I say GREENLIGHT
5
Questions
1. What happened when you just put
the nerd in your mouth but did not
chew?

Poll
What do you think the nerds represents?
Water in the ecosystem
Rocks getting broken down over time
13
Two types of Weathering:
Mechanical Weathering and Chemical Weathering
14
Two Types of Weathering
1. MECHANICAL WEATHERING –
Physical processes that break rock into
fragments or smaller pieces
Examples:
1. Plant Roots
2. Burrowing Animals
3. Ice Wedging - occurs when water enters
cracks of rocks, freezes and expands, and
breaks rock apart.
15
Mechanical - Plant Roots
16
Mechanical – Burrowing Animals
17
Mechanical – Ice Wedging
18
Two Types of Weathering
• 2. CHEMICAL WEATHERING –
Chemical reactions dissolve minerals in
rocks or change them into different
minerals.
• Example: Dissolving - chemical process that
occurs when chemicals break down roock
19
Chemical – Dissolving
20
Dissolved carbon dioxide in rainwater or in moist air forms carbonic acid, and this acid reacts with minerals in rocks.
Caves are formed by Chemical Weathering!
21
Question 1
What is the
difference between
mechanical and
chemical
weathering?
22
Multiple Choice
What is Mechanical Weathering?
Chemical process that breaks down rocks into smaller pieces
Physical Process that breaks rocks into fragments
23
Multiple Choice
What is chemical Weathering?
Chemical reactions dissolve minerals in rocks or change them into different minerals.
Physical processes that break rock into fragments or smaller pieces

Multiple Select
What are some examples of Mechanical Weathering?
Plant roots
dissolving
Burrowing animals
Ice wedging
25
Multiple Choice
What is an example of Chemical Weathering?
Ice Wedging
Dissolving

1. What happened to the sand when
Ms. Holmes blew on it with the straw?
Questions
31
4 Agents of Erosion:
1. Wind
2. Water
3. Gravity
4. Glaciers
32
Open Ended
What are the 4 agents of erosion? Please list then submit.
33
Note: Weathering has to happen before
erosion. The rocks have to be broken
into smaller sediments before they can
be eroded away.
34
Where did the sand end up? Did it change
location or positions?
Questions
35
Process in which erosion stops
when the moving particles settle on a surface
What is Deposition?
36
Multiple Choice
What is the process in which erosion stops?
Weathering
Erosion
Deposition
37
Multiple Choice
What is the process of sediment being moved by water, wind, or ice?

Closure(Explain your answers)
Q. What is the process that picks up and moves
weathered rocks?
A. Erosion B. Weathering C. Deposition
Q. Deposition changes the Earth’s surface because
bits of broken rock and soil _____.
A. stop rivers from flowing. B. are dropped in new
places.
C. move very slowly.
