Before we start, let's get the terminology straight. The Netherlands is a country
that is often called Holland, after its largest province. People who live in the
Netherlands are Dutch, sometimes called Hollanders. Many people use these
terms interchangeably.

The Netherlands has come to be known for tulips, windmills, canals, cheese, and
more. But why? What is it about the land that the Dutch call home that spurred
these cultural developments? Primarily, it is the fact that an entire third of the
Netherlands is below sea level.
