The effects of the advances in technology in different fields.

  • Culture and entertainment:Technological advances in culture and entertainment affect areas such as the film industry and the video game industry with the release of new video game consoles. The first video game console appeared in the 1970s.

  • At home: Technological advances have helped improve our lifestyles throughout historyensuring our wellness, security and comfort at home.

  • Medicine: Advances in medicine improve our quality of life. New cures for diseases and methods for their prevention have an impact on our life.

3

  • Transport: Advances in means of transport help us transport goods more easily and travel to places. This leads to new relationships being formed between people and cultures.

  • Communications: Advances in communications allow us to get in touch with people who live abroad. Devices have changed the way we communicate and the way we obtain and receive information.

One of the most important inventions of the last century has been the computer. Nowadays everybody has at least one computer at home. Computers provide us with many possibilities.

  • Write: We can use them to write letters, emails, presentations, articles, etc.

  • Communicate: Through social networks and our e-mail account we can communicate and share information.

  • Create: Computers are closely related to our leisure time allowing us to play games, watch films, etc.

Technical advances have had an impact on medicine and medical treatment. These advances have also improved the prevention and diagnosis of diseases.

  • Diagnosis: New machines provide images of the inside of the body. They allow doctors to monitor illnesses more quickly and effectively.

  • Surgery: Technological advances in surgery allow doctors to treat diseases and injuries using less invasive techniques. This results in a better and quicker patient recovery process. For example, the organ transplant field benefits from these advances. The lives of many people are saved and many have their sight restored thanks to them.

  • Investigation: The use of technical tools in laboratories allows scientists to progress in the investigation of new medicines and vaccines.

Let's look at some of these machines.

  • X-ray: An X-ray machine produces images of the inside of the body, usually of bones and organs. X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that passes through the human body.

  • Ultrasound: An ultrasound scanner is a device that creates an image of internal body structures using high frequency sound waves. The procedure is safer than the radiation caused by X-rays, which is why it is used during pregnancy to produce images of the baby.

  • CT scan: CT scan stands for computerised axial tomography. It consists of an X-ray machine that rotates around your body combined with a computer that reproduces images of the scan. The images produced are more detailed than the ones produced by an X-ray machine.

11

Endoscope: An endoscope is a ,long, thin, flexible tube with a video camera at one end. It can be inserted into the body through the mouth or through asurgical cut. An endoscope is combined with a TV screen where images are shown.

  • MRI scan: MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. An MRI scanner is a tube with magnets which uses magnetic fields and radio waves. MRI is combined with a computer that processes the information.
