Probability

TEKS 7.6H I make qualitative and quantitative predictions

Determine experimental and theoretical probabilities

TEKS 7.6 A-E

Use lists and tree diagrams for events

Make predictions

2

Probability Scale

  • 0% = Impossible to happen

  • 25% = Unlikely

  • 50% = Even Change

  • 75% = Likely

  • 100% = Certain

Match each event with its likelihood

impossible

Unlikely

As likely as not

Likely

Certain

A pig flying.

Picking a face card from a deck of cards.

Getting heads on a coin toss.

A sum greater than 4 when rolling 2 dice.

Rolling a number less than 7 on a die.

Labelling

Place each word on the probability scale

Drag labels to their correct position on the image

6

Probability of Simple Events

Part (want).

Total (have)

***Always reduce/simplify

7

For example...

IF I toss a quarter, what is the probability that I will get heads? This is really asking what is the chance that I will land on heads?

media

8

What is the probability?

When you toss a coin, the chance that it will land on heads is 1 out of 2. This is because there is 1 side that is heads and there are two total options.

media

9

Different ways to write probability

You could say that there is a 1/2 chance or 1 out of 2 chance or 50% chance

media

10

Probability of the Spinner

  • Look at the spinner at your right.

  • How many possible outcomes are there?

14

How do you know if it is a complement problem?

  • When it says: Not [event]

  • Ex: What is the probability of Not rolling a number greater than 4?

  • Ex: P(Not greater than 4)

P(Not Blue) = 1/4

2

P(Not Blue) = 1/2

17

Theoretical vs Experimental Probability

18

Multiple Choice

Theoretical Probability is:

1

What will happen

2

What should happen

3

What I want to happen

4

What does happen

19

Theoretical Probability

media

20

Experimental Probability

media

21

Multiple Choice

Experimental Probability is:

1

What will happen

2

What should happen

3

What I think happens

4

What does happen
