Step 1 ,identify the topic , step 2 identify what the author is saying about the topic , and step 3 identify the started main idea.

The main idea is the author's message about the topic. The main idea is what the author's talking about and what were focusing on.

How do you use the main idea?
The main idea can be expressed as a summation of the information in the paragraph as well as a link to information in the next paragraph.
Why do you use the main idea?
The important piece of information the author wants you to know.

One day, Kelly was reading a book. All of a sudden,her brother came into her bedroom and stole her book and took it. Her brother hid the book and left the house. Kelly looked everywhere and she couldn't find the book, until she remembered one place that she didn't look at... the basement! Kelly hated the basement and she was really scared to go in. She eventually found the book and never went back there again.
What's the main idea?The main idea is Kelly's brother took her book.
