What events happened at the end of the war?
In March 1864, Ulysses S. Grant was given command of all Union armies.
The Union wanted to cut off Florida’s supplies from the rest of the Confederacy. The Confederates won the Battle of Olustee and the Battle of Natural Bridge in Florida.
President Lincoln won reelection in 1864. In early 1865, Congress banned slavery by passing the Thirteenth Amendment.

The War Ends
What is total war?
General Sherman burned much of Atlanta to break the South’s will. Along his March to the Sea, he burned other cities and crops.
General Lee withdrew from Petersburg, and the Union army marched toward Richmond. Jefferson Davis and his cabinet fled the city.
Lee surrendered to General Grant in Appomattox, Virginia, on April 9, 1865.

What role did Black Americans play in the conflict?
At the beginning of the war, neither the South nor the North would allow African Americans to enlist in the army.
Confederate leaders feared African American soldiers would attack fellow troops or revolt. President Lincoln feared offending the border states.
By 1862, the Union formed African American regiments. These soldiers served bravely and effectively in the war.
