Depending on the climate, weather, terrain, and available resources, you might want to construct a temporary refuge to shield you from the elements until you encounter your rescuers. You should insulate your shelter to help you retain valuable body heat in cold weather or provide sun protection to minimize your dehydration in a hot, arid climate.

​A human can survive only about three days without water, so finding and collecting drinking water should be one of your priorities in a survival scenario. Use a water filter, iodine tablets, or a fire to boil the water. However you choose to purify water, it’s important to do it in amounts to meet your hydration needs.

​Gather surplus supplies when possible and diversify your diet as much as you can to provide your body with essential protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Forage for edible flowers, roots, and mushrooms; use natural materials to build snares for small game; or craft fishing tools to catch fish.

Keep your cool and remember the bear is unlikely to attack.

Stay Calm

If you make a run for it, the bear’s instinct will be to chase you.

Fight the Urge to Run

Sing, shout, or start chatting away to show them you’re human.

Talk to the Bear

The bigger you look, the more likely the bear will be too scared to attack.

Bears may sprint at you momentarily to see if you’ll run, but don’t react.

Stand your ground if the bear charges at you.

If the bear moves towards you, spray it to send it fleeing away.

Use your bear spray if you have it.

If they just sit there staring, shuffle away extremely slowly.

​​Move away slowly if the bear doesn’t leave.

Lie down in the fetal position to prove you won’t hurt them.

Play dead if you’re attacked by a brown/grizzly bear.
