THE SCIENCE OF FRIENDSHIP
By Suzanne Degges White pH.D
Most researchers agree that friendship exist within the socio-emotional area and that it is characterized by interdependence and the voluntary nature of interactions.
There are two main categories of factors that influence our choice of potential friends: individual factors and environmental factors. Individual factors include such influences as openness, social skills, and similarity. Environmental factors include such as proximity, geography, activities, and life events.
We normally prefer friends who believe to be similar to ourselves and who have personalities that we enjoy being around, and research continues to support this preference as a good strategy: choosing friends such as these most likely reduces the possibility for interpesonal conflict.
