• Absolute Monarchy = is a form of monarchy in which the monarch holds supreme autocratic authority, 

• King Louis XIV of France and his reign as King is a perfect example of an absolute Monarchy.

The Estate System

• Was the Social Hierarchy system in France before 1789

• Citizens of France were divided into 3 classes or "Estates"

• 1. First Estate: The Clergy

• 2. Second Estate: The Nobles

• 3. Third Estate: Middle class, the working class, and peasants.

Social Injustice

• The third estate was unhappy

• They felt they were "carrying" the First and Second Estates.

• The rich depended on the their money, since the third estate paid all the taxes
