define what
Project Based Learning;

Traditional Literacy Instructions;
●
determine
the
advantages
and

of
PBL; and
●

➢
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which
students learn by actively engaging in real
-
world and
personally meaningful projects.
➢
PBL is an approach where the students work over an
extended time period for a purpose beyond satisfying a
school requirement
—
to build something, to create
something, to respond to a question they have, to solve a
real problem, or to address a real need.

Traditional Literacy Instruction
Project-Based Literacy Instruction
Students read, write, and learn because you
told them to, their parents want them to, and/or
they think they should.
Students read, write, and learn because there
is a real-world problem to solve, a need to
address, or a question to answer.
Students attend to lessons because they’re
supposed to.
Students attend to lessons because doing so
will help them achieve their project goal.
Students complete their homework to obtain a
sticker or avoid negative consequences.
Students complete their homework because it
helps them get one step closer to their project
goal.
Each student works on his or her own writing,
which may be unrelated to that of his or her
classmates.
Whether writing individually or collaboratively,
students work together toward a common
writing goal.

Project-Based Literacy Instruction
Reading, writing, and each content area
are taught in different parts of the day.
Reading, writing, and one or more
content areas are often integrated.
Students read discrete texts largely
unrelated to each other.
Students read many texts on the same
topic or closely related topics.
Students read informational text
because they were asked to do so.
Students read informational text
because they want or need information.
Students write informational text for
implicit purposes, for you, their
classmates, and perhaps themselves.
Students write informational text for
explicit purposes and for audiences
beyond the classroom.

The Main Advantages of the Project
-
Based Learning Approach (cont.)
2.
Organizational Skills.
➢
These skills have already become a must at present and are developed
during the project work as well. It’s important to organize the project
mentally as well as physically.
3.
Collaboration Skills.
➢
Group research and project fulfillment is a great experience for students,
which allows them to see the importance of teamwork firsthand. This is a
precious lesson for their future office work or even for running a
business.

4. Problem
-
Solving Skills.
➢
Project
-
based learning stimulates the students to think outside of the box
and look for new unusual ways of problem
-
solving. Their role should be
active and it’s impossible to idle by
5. Self
-
Direction.
➢
It’s an amazing instrument driving any task or even business. During their
project work, the learners not only have to manage their time but also decide
where to move further at each stage of the research. Practicing the skill in
every task accomplished, the individuals learn to find the best possible way
of action for each stage of the project and for its overall completion.

The Main Advantages of the Project
-
Based Learning Approach (cont.)
6. Ability to Find Information.
➢
Any research presupposes that a student should look for the information
himself, not from a tutor or a lecturer. The skill to find the necessary data
is an extremely
valuable asset
for life, especially for its business aspect.
7. Lifelong Learning Ability.
➢
Due to the fact that
PBL is based on the learners’ interests and their
active part in it, the approach develops an interest and a habit of lifelong
education. This desire and ability are essential for every individual
nowadays to be able to adapt to a constantly changing environment.
9
The modern project
-
based learning
programs imply future
-
focused methods
and consequently, the students graduate
much more ready for work than their
testing
-
focused fellows.

1. Driving Question
Every class project should begin with a
driving question
that is specifically aligned
to a learning goal. The level of complexity of
the driving question should be appropriate for
the type of students in the classroom.
19
20
21
The next step students find a
solution to the driving
question. Here is where the
students solve the problems
often time with creations,
models and presentations.
3. Find a Solution
22
23
4. Give the Students a Voice
Allow students to
make their projects
available to the
public.
