104. 1st Grade SSR: Seabirds

Did you ever see the sea? Then maybe you have seen seabirds! Seabirds make nests on shores and cliffs by the sea. Seabirds get food from the sea.

Gulls are seabirds that you will see most days at the beach, but there are many other kinds of seabirds.

This slender white bird may seem like a gull, but it is not. It is a tern. It has a black cap, red legs, and a sharp, red beak. It dives into the sea to catch fish to eat. It can catch insects to eat, too.

The tern lays eggs and feeds its chicks in the summer. After summer, it will fly very far to its winter home.

This plump black and white bird is a puffin. Its big beak is bright and pretty now, but it will turn dull in winter.

One way puffins make nests is to dig a burrow. A burrow is a long hole in the dirt. Then the puffins lay eggs inside these holes. When the chicks hatch, mom and dad puffins catch fish for them to eat.

This big brown bird likes to glide low over the waves. It will also fly up high to scan the sea to try to find fish.

When this bird sees fish, it moves fast! It dives into the sea like a dart. It opens its beak and uses the big bag under it to catch the fish. Then it gulps them down.

This seabird can catch its own fish, but it will steal them if it can! It chases other birds that have fish in their beaks. It jabs at them. It grabs the birds and shakes them to make them drop their fish. Then the bird eats its free meal!
