113. 1st Grade SRR: Shark and Stingrays

“Beth! Beth!” Lex and Eve called. The girls found their big sister reading a book. “Beth! Beth!” chirped Pete, the pet bird. “At least Pete heard us,” Lex told Eve. “Beth seems like she is in another world when she reads.” Lex set Pete on Beth’s knee. At last, Beth looked up. “Beth! Beth!” chirped Pete again.

“Beth, it’s time to go!” Lex said. “Mom is waiting. Eve and I have a swim meet.”

“We can’t be late,” added Eve. “The Sharks will race the Stingrays today.”

“The Sharks will win,” Lex said. “Sharks swim faster than stingrays!”

“Sharks! Fast!” Pete chirped. “Hurry, Beth,” said Eve. The girls ran out.

“Can sharks swim faster than stingrays?” Beth asked herself. She stood up and set Pete on his stand.

Beth went to her bookcase. She found five books on sea life and put them in her backpack. Then Beth got her sketchbook.

“Beth, hurry!” Eve yelled.

Beth’s twin sisters played many sports. Beth did not like sports as much. She loved to read and often had a book in her hand.

Now Beth wanted to study sharks and stingrays. Which one swam faster?

Beth sat on a bench while her sisters swam. She read about sea life, took notes, and sketched pictures in her sketchbook.

When the swim meet ended, Lex and Eve ran to Beth. “Look at our ribbons!” Eve said. “We swam as fast as sharks!”

“I’ve been studying sea life,” Beth told the girls. “Sharks swim faster than stingrays, so Sharks is a good name for your team.”

“Another team we are on is the Wild Cats,” said Eve. “We run as fast as cats!”

Beth knew which sea animals swam fast. Now she wanted to learn about fast land animals. Beth went to see Miss Hood.

“This bookcase has books about animals around the world,” Miss Hood told Beth. “Do you need books for the contest?”

“What contest?” asked Beth. “I haven’t heard of it yet, but please tell me about it.”
