119. 1st Grade SRR: Bear Gets Sick

One night, Bear did not feel well. He had the flu. He had to stay at home in his den and not check on the zoo, as he would be doing if he did not have to stay in bed. This made Bear feel blue.

His pals knew that he felt sad and that he did not feel well. Bear did so much for them. Now they wanted to help him, too.

Duck came to see Bear with tea and hot soup. The soup was the color of a big yellow moon. The tea was the color of the night sky. Bear took little sips of both.

“Soup and tea will help you feel better,” said Duck. “They will help you sleep, too.”

“Thank you,” said Bear.

Bat came with a few things for his pal. He had books and music.

“These books are good to read when you cannot sleep,” said Bat. “I hope this music helps make you feel happy.”

Bear looked at them and gave Bat a big grin. “Thank you so much,” he said. “It is true that the flu makes it hard to sleep!”​

Crow flew in with games and a treat tucked in her wings.

“These games are so much fun,” she said. “You can play them when you feel better. I will play chess with you. And here is an oatcake for when you feel like eating.”

“Thank you!” said Bear. Then he let out a big sneeze. He blew his nose.

Just then, Bobcat slid up next to Bear’s bed. He looked sad.

“Your other pals got you nice things,” said Bobcat. “I feel so bad. I am your best pal, but I did not have money to get you a gift. I will stay with you while you are sick. Then you will not feel so blue.”

Bear looked up at Bobcat and all his pals. He heard the music play and smelled the nice hot soup and tea. He felt so happy to be with such good pals.

“What would I do without you?” he asked.

“You would take a nap!” quacked Duck. “Go to sleep. We will be back!”
