65. 1st Grade SRR: Brave Kate

Kate, Dave, Liz, and Tuck are best pals. They always do fun things. The best pals play games, trade stuff, and plan trips to take.

On this trip, the pals will camp out at Crane Lake. It will be such fun!

“This is a good spot,” Liz tells the others. “We should set up camp.”

Kate gets the tent cloth on its poles. Liz stamps in tent stakes. Dave rubs sticks to make a flame. Tuck makes them hot things to eat.

The pals ate fish, eggs, and grits. They sat still and looked at the sunset. Then they all went to bed.

The tent puffed up and went flat. “What is that?” asked Liz. “It must be the wind,” Kate said.

“What is that swish, swish?” asked Tuck. “It makes me upset.”

“It is just the wind,” said Kate. “It hits branches that hit the tent.”

“Kate is brave,” Tuck said, “but I am not. I tuck into my shell.”

Thump, thump, thump! Dave began to shake. “What is that, Kate?” he asked. “It upsets me.”

“Yes, what is that?” asked Liz. “It upsets Dave and Tuck—and me!”

“Shall I go check?” Kate asked

Kate left the tent to go check things out. Kate is so brave!

When she comes back in, Kate tells them, “It is the wind! The wind shakes down nuts that thump on our tent.” Kate gives her pals nuts.
