The Star family lives under the water in a cozy home. Mom Star likes to play her flute. Dad Star likes to play his horn. They make jazz music day and night.

The Stars have a baby. Her name is Tulip, and she likes loud songs, too. She taps her feet to the jazzy beat.

The Crab family lives in a cozy home next to the Stars. Mom Crab likes to play her harp. She plays slowly and sweetly. Dad Crab sings in a low voice. They like slow, sweet songs instead of loud songs.

Their baby is named Clover. She also likes these slow, sweet songs that her mom and dad play at home.

One night, the Stars played very loud music. Mom Crab, Dad Crab, and Clover could not sleep at all.

“Just once, I would like to relax at bedtime!” Mom Crab cried out.

“We’ll ask them to stop,” Dad Crab said. “I hope they will delay playing their music until morning, so we can sleep tonight.”

The Crabs marched over to the Star family’s home. Mom Crab knocked loudly, but the Stars kept right on playing. Mom Crab knocked again, even louder.

The music stopped, and the door swung open at once. Dad Star smiled at them.

“Hi! Come on in!” he said brightly. “We’re so glad to see you!”

“We came to tell you that the music is a bit too loud,” Dad Crab replied. “I don’t mean to be unkind, but we need to sleep.”

“Sure!” Dad Star cried. “That’s fine. We’ll tone it down now, but please come back in the morning, so we can all play sweet, smooth jazz together. Sleep well!”

“That sounds good!” said Mom Crab.

Now the Stars and the Crabs play songs together in a band called the Sea Scales. They hold concerts in parks and play at picnics. The animals who hear them like them to play and replay their best songs.

Tulip and Clover sing with the band, too. They tap their feet and sway to the sweet sounds of music under the sea.
